Cystic Acne Scar Treatment
![]() |
Cystic acne is a form of acne that occurs below the skin and is unsightly and painful. It often leaves scars on the skin that may last a lifetime if not treated. There are a variety of cystic acne scar treatment methods that you may want to consider. They include dermabrasion, laser resurfacing and chemical peels. The right method for you will depend on the location and severity of your scars. Your dermatologist will recommend what they believe to be the most appropriate treatment for your skin. These procedures should only be performed by an experienced professional.
Dermabrasion involves removing top layers of skin using a high powered skin sanding device. Although this procedure is quite effective in reducing the look and feel of the skin, it can be quite painful. There is a recovery time of at least two weeks after this procedure. Many people describe the feeling of dermabrasion as somewhat like a severe sunburn. The skin is red and raw for a time following the procedure after which smoother skin is revealed. The pain is worth it for many who hate their acne scars and want them removed no matter what. One alternative to dermabrasion is laser resurfacing.
Laser resurfacing reveals new skin using laser light. It is usually described as being painless or mildly uncomfortable and requires a much shorter recovery time than dermabrasion. There may be a slight stinging sensation when the laser is applied, like the snapping of a rubber band. There are actually different types of lasers for different skin care needs. Your dermatologist can tell you more about the risks and rewards associated with this type of treatment. Laser resurfacing is usually not recommended for dark skin tones as it may affect pigmentation.
Chemical peels are another type of cystic acne scar treatment you may want to consider. Like dermabrasion, these peels remove top layers of skin and can be painful. The level of discomfort you will experience depends on how strong the peel is and your personal pain threshold. Chemical peels do require some recovery time with the deepest peels requiring the longest. The skin may turn white or blister following a peel and it is extremely important to avoid sun exposure during the healing process. Your dermatologist can answer all your questions about various scar treatment methods including the ones described in this article.
